Agronomic traits and chemical composition of single hybrids of sweet corn Horticultura Brasileira
Kwiatkowski,Angela; Clemente,Edmar; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
In Brazil, the greengrocery market of sweet corn has been expanding along the country. In contrast, there have been few agri-industries canning sweet corn (Zea mays) because of the lack of cultivars with agronomic characteristics proper to industrial purposes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the general combining ability (GCA) of seven inbred lines of sweet corn, and the specific combining ability (SCA) of their hybrid combinations based on their agronomic traits, and the chemical composition of the grain. In the growing season 2006/2007, twenty-one single hybrids were evaluated in the Iguatemi Research Station, Maringá County, Northwestern Paraná, in Brazil using a complete randomized block design with four replications. Data were subjected to...

Diallel analysis of maize hybrids for agronomic and bromatological forage traits Agronomy
Mendes, Matheus Henrique Silveira; Pereira, Carlos Henrique; Souza, João Cândido de.
The aim of this study was to evaluate a diallel of maize hybrids for traits related to forage production and nutritional value. Six commercial hybrids were used as parents. The crosses were made according to a complete diallel design, obtaining the F1 and reciprocal crosses. The evaluations were performed in the main and second crop seasons in the 2010/2011 crop year at the Center for Technological Development in Agriculture of the Federal University of Lavras, located in Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The experimental precision indicated by the coefficient of variation was good for all the traits measured. Significant differences were not observed among the crosses for traits related to the nutritional value of the forage. For fresh matter yield and...

Estimation of variances of the effects of incomplete diallels using a matrix approach Genet. Mol. Biol.
Assis,Giselle Mariano Lessa de; Fonseca,Ricardo da; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Carneiro Júnior,José Marques.
A matrix approach is described for assessing the variance of effects in incomplete diallels designs. The method is illustrated by reference to simulated complete and incomplete diallels using different combinations of constraints, average degree of dominance and, for the incomplete diallel, number of hybrids. Our results showed that caution should be taken in working with incomplete diallels under conditions of overdominance because there were changes in the rank of the genotypes when the excluded hybrid had parents with a low frequency of the favorable allele (i.e. the allele which increases expression of a character). The expression described in this paper is a rapid and safe approach to estimate variances and covariances of the effects of contrasts of...

Twelve corn hybrids recommended for cropping in the south-central region of the Paraná State and 66 crossings obtained among these hybrids were evaluated for agronomic and morphological traits. These genotypes were evaluated in three experiments performed in Laranjeiras do Sul, Guarapuava and Cantagalo, Paraná State, Brazil. Heterosis and specific combining ability (SCA) were estimated for yield of husked ears. Data from measuring 22 morphological/agronomical traits of the parents were subjected to a multivariate joint analysis of variance and cluster analysis to group the parental hybrids via the neighbor method, using the generalized Mahalanobis distance. Pearson correlation coefficients between heterosis, SCA, D2 and yield of husked ears were obtained....

Genetic variability in popcorn synthetic population Agronomy
Oliveira, Gustavo Hugo Ferreira de; Amaral, Camila; Revolti, Lucas Tadeu Mazza; Buzinaro, Rodolfo; Moro, Gustavo Vitti.
The Brazilian popcorn has low genetic variability and the successful development of advanced lines, new popcorn cultivars with high grain yield (GY) and expansion volume (PE) is dependent on parental selection and precise determination of heterotic groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate genetic variability and identify heterotic groups in synthetic populations of popcorn, using diallel crosses. Thus, nine synthetic populations were crossed using complete diallel scheme. The GY and PE traits of 36 hybrids and reciprocals were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with 72 treatments and two replicates in two years. The effects of non-additive genes were the most important in the genetic control of these traits, indicating a favorable...

Heterosis and combining ability analyses from the partial diallel Bragantia
Viana,José Marcelo Soriano.
This study discusses from the theoretical standpoint the analyses of heterosis and combining ability from the partial diallel. Aiming at to investigate the information provided by the genetic parameters, simulation studies were realized. The genetic model adjusted considered one gene, groups of six populations, three degrees of dominance (|d/a| equal to 0.5, 1 and 2, representing partial, complete and overdominance) and random allelic frequencies. For each degree of dominance 50 replications were performed. The model for heterosis analysis does not need to be restricted. The unrestricted model gives the same information as the restricted one. The model for combining ability is restricted. The restrictions of the partial-G2 model of GERALDI and...

Interference of genotypes x environments interaction in the genetic control of resistance to Asian rust soybean PAB
Ribeiro,Aliny Simony; Toledo,José Francisco Ferraz de; Ramalho,Magno Antonio Patto.
The objectives of this work were to identify parents resistant to Asian soybean rust using diallel crosses, obtain information on the genetic control of soybean resistance to the pathogen and verify whether the combining ability estimates interact with the environment (year or time of assessment). The F1 generation was obtained in a greenhouse from crosses between five contrasting parents for the trait resistance to soybean rust, in a complete diallel without reciprocals. Two rust-severity assessments were carried out on individual soybean plants of 25 treatments (parents and F2 and F3 populations) in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008, in an experimental field at Embrapa Soja, Londrina, PR, Brazil. Additive effects predominated in the genetic control of soybean...

Partial diallel analysis of agronomic characters in rice (Oryza sativa L.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Torres,Edgar Alonso; Geraldi,Isaias O..
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) breeding seeking to combine high productivity and cold tolerance for the temperate Latin America region is an important challenge. We estimated some useful parameters which can be used to investigate the genetic control of agronomic characters in crosses combining cold tolerance and productivity. A partial diallel design was used in crosses between six tropical indica rice cold susceptible genotypes (group 1) and seven japonica or indica/japonica cold tolerant rice genotypes (group 2). Parents and crosses were evaluated for agronomic characters under field conditions in two different experiments in 2005. The results showed significant mid-parent heterosis for all characters (plant height, tiller number, days to 50% flowering, panicle...

PESSOA,ANGELA M.S.; RÊGO,ELIZANILDA R. DO; SANTOS,CRISTINE A.P. DOS; CARVALHO,MICHELLE G. DE; MESQUITA,JÚLIO C.P. DE; RÊGO,MAILSON M. DO.
Abstract: The genus Capsicum is cultivated in various parts of the world, with C. annuum showing high diversity and potential for ornamental purposes and genetic improvement. The aim of this work was to evaluate the combining ability and heterosis of seedling and plant traits in accessions of ornamental pepper and their hybrids. Seven accessions of C. annuum were handcrossed and twelve quantitative plant traits were evaluated. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, the Scott-Knott test and diallel analysis using Griffing’s method I (fixed model). Heterosis and its components were also determined. Non-additive effects were found for seedling height, cotyledonous leaf length and width; stem diameter and chlorophyll b content. All other traits...
